Synopsis of Lecture:

Frontline Medical Humanitarian Response and Public Health Diplomacy in the Digital Era

Abstract

Globalisation, climate change, population movement, urbanisation, demographic ageing and
protracted crises have been reshaping the global risk landscape for health. The interactions
of extreme weather events, environmental degradation, emerging infectious threats and
fragile health systems have exacerbated frequencies of complex emergencies and led
to catastrophic health consequences that burden disproportionately rest on the most
vulnerable populations.

In this inaugural lecture, Professor Chan will share her three decade-long global experiences
and insights from field practices, evidence-based academic research and capacity-building
initiatives in disaster and humanitarian medicine. Her lecture will highlight lessons learnt,
challenges and the latest frontiers in the protection of health and dignity in the digital era.
The dynamics and intersections of frontline medical humanitarian response, public health
diplomacy, humanitarian ethics and global health equity will also be discussed.
