On 24 July, Professor Isabella Poon Wai-yin, Provost of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), led a delegation to visit Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) and held talks with Professor Han Jiecai, President of HIT. Also attending the meeting were Shuai Yong, HIT Vice-President; Wu Jian, Director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Office; Shen Chao, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Office; Zhi Xiyang, HIT Associate Dean of the School of Astronautics; Cheng Jian, HIT Associate Dean of the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering; Yuan Chengxun, HIT Associate Dean of the School of Physics, and Tang Junyue, researcher at the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of HIT.

During the talks, both sides reviewed their years of collaborative achievements and exchanged views on further deepening their partnership. President Han Jiecai noted that CUHK has distinguished itself in international education and fundamental research, and that the two universities have long maintained close cooperation, laying a solid foundation for collaboration. He expressed the hope that both institutions would pursue more in-depth joint research in areas such as fundamental research and medical-engineering integration, jointly explore innovative models for talent development, and set a benchmark for collaborative innovation between the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong/Macao universities, thereby promoting the integrated development of education, science and technology, and talent.

Professor Isabella Poon Wai-yin remarked that HIT boasts exceptional strength in aerospace technology and has achieved continuous breakthroughs in medical-engineering interdisciplinary research. In recent years, multiple collaborative projects between the two universities have progressed smoothly and yielded positive results, fully demonstrating their potential for cooperation. She expressed her hope that both sides would further strengthen their partnership, expand long-term two-way exchange mechanisms for faculty and students, and jointly cultivate outstanding talents with interdisciplinary capabilities and international perspectives, contributing to the nation’s high-level scientific and technological innovation and talent development.

During the visit, the delegation toured HIT’s Satellite Technology Research Institute, the Lunar Soil Laboratory, the HITSAT R&D and Test Headquarters Base, and the Space Environment Ground Simulation Facility, gaining an in-depth understanding of the university’s latest developments in aerospace technology and related frontier fields. In addition, the delegation attended the closing ceremony of the “2026 HIT-CUHK Aerospace Science Summer School” and interacted with faculty and students.

Apart from Professor Isabella Poon Wai-yin, the delegation also included Professor Yang Hongfeng, Director of the Aerospace Science and Earth Informatics and X Double Major Programme, Professor Yan Renbin from the Department of Physics, Professor Zhang Weizhao from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, and Professor Chen Fei from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering. The delegation held in-depth discussions with representatives from HIT’s School of Astronautics and the Office of International Cooperation on topics including research collaboration, student exchanges, and talent development.

This visit further consolidated the foundation of cooperation between CUHK and HIT, and laid a solid groundwork for deeper collaboration between the two universities in aerospace science, interdisciplinary research, innovative talent cultivation, and international cooperation in the future.
