South and Southeast Asian Cultural Festival

Various cultural activities always sprout up on campus in springy March. This year, the Office of Student Affairs is going to organize the South and Southeast Asian Cultural Festival to present the kaleidoscopic cultures of these two regions cross the board – opening ceremony, food and cultural booths, talk and workshops, and many others. Don’t be spoilt for choice!

1. Opening Ceremony
As the kick-off event of the Festival, the Ceremony will be lined up with musical performances, such as an Indian drumming performance, a fusion of Nepalese dance and flash mob. It is an enticing start not to be missed!

2. Local South and Southeast Asian Market
The Cultural Square will be transformed into a local market where diverse and vibrant South and Southeast Asian cultures merge. Visitors can taste local food, meet locals and experience some local ways of life, so, remember to drop by in this fabulous marketplace!

3. Stand by You! 我的南亞鄰居
As the saying goes, ‘No man is an island’. Support for our neighbours in Hong Kong or in our neigbouring regions is equally essential. In this sharing session, the HKSKH Lady Maclehose Centre and a CUHK graduate who went on service trips will share the significance of their service to the South Asian people in town and in their native lands.

4. Tofu Making Workshop
Soft or firm, savoury or sweet, steamed or fried, tofu is well-known for its versatility, nice taste and good nutrition. It plays an important role in East Asian and Southeast Asian food culture, so we may well have eaten it, but do you know how it is made? Here comes a chance for you to try your hand at making this widely-enjoyed food!

Target: All CUHK students, while priority will be given to the i-Ambassadors of the Office of Student Affairs

5. Knowing Indonesia, the Right Way
Put aside your textbooks, throw yourselves in the briskly music of Angklung – the Indonesian students will instruct you how to play this traditional musical instrument. Also, get your body moving – the Indonesian games will bring you back to the old Indonesian days. Although you are not in Bali, there is still a way for you to experience a real Indonesia.

6. My Internship Days in an Exotic Land – An Eye-opening Experience
Internship opportunities abound for CUHK students – working in the South and Southeast Asia regions is no doubt on the list. In this sharing session, three students interning in Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Thailand respectively will share their memorable internship stories. Of course, tips from them are expected for intern hopefuls!

7. An Introduction to an Indian Folk Dance: Dandiya Raas
Dandiya Raas, a traditional folk dance of India, is associated with scenes of Holi, which is a famous spring festival known as the festival of colours. At this workshop, our Indian students will introduce the dance to the participants by dancing together and feel the soul of their exotic music culture.

8. Thai Loy Krathong Festival – Krathong Making Workshop
Loy Krathong, or Water Lantern Festival, is a widely celebrated occasion in Thailand where people express their gratitude to the Goddess of Water and pray for blessings for the year ahead. In this workshop, participants can try their hands at making their own krathong with the guidance of Thai students!
