Mrs. Mona Shaw, Chairperson of The Sir Run Run Shaw Charitable Trust, The Shaw Foundation Hong Kong and The Shaw Prize Foundation, passed away on Wednesday, 22 November 2017, at the age of 83. The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Shaw College of CUHK, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and the Shaw College of CUHK (SZ) are profoundly saddened and offer our deepest condolences to her family.

Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK said, “Mrs. Shaw made a remarkable contribution and supported charities continuously, benefitting the higher education sector in Hong Kong and mainland China. Mrs. Shaw and Mr. Run Run Shaw supported the development of education, medical sciences, scientific research, and arts and culture in CUHK with remarkable generosity. All of us cherish the memory of them and keep in mind their kindness. I would like to offer our deepest condolence to Mrs. Shaw’s family members on behalf of the teachers, students and alumni of CUHK.”

Mrs. Shaw made a significant impact on the film and TV industry. Both Mrs. Shaw and Mr. Run Run Shaw were great philanthropists and both were dedicated to the promotion of education, scientific research, medical and welfare services, and culture and the arts, making great contributions to society either under their names or via the Foundations. Mrs. Shaw and Mr. Run Run Shaw had a long association with CUHK through numerous generous donations to support the development of CUHK and benefit the students. These included the establishment of Shaw College, the fourth college of CUHK, in the 1980s, and donations in recent years to support the establishment of the Shaw College of CUHK (SZ). These donations were of particular significance to the development of CUHK.

Over the years, The Shaw Prize Foundation arranged for many Shaw Laureates to visit the CUHK campus where they shared important academic and scholarly information with their counterparts at CUHK.
