The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Otto Wong Brain Tumour Centre’s held its tenth charity walkathon ‘Brain Trekking 2017’ (Hong Kong Region) last Saturday (6 May).  More than 500 people participated in the 3.5 km-walk along Lugard Road and Harlech Road, starting from and finishing at the Peak Road Garden.  Guests of Honor of the event included Dr. Su Vui LO, Cluster Chief Executive, New Territories East Cluster, Hospital Authority; Ms. Jennifer CHEN, Donor of CUHK Otto Wong Brain Tumour Centre; Prof. James Yun-wong LAU, Chairman & Yao Ling Sun Professor of Surgery of the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, CUHK, Prof. Wai-sang POON, Director of CUHK Otto Wong Brain Tumour Centre; and Dr. Danny Tat-ming CHAN, on behalf of the International Brain Tumour Alliance. 

‘Brain Trekking 2017’ (Hong Kong Region) is part of a global event organized by the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA).  It aims to raise public awareness on brain tumours.  The total mileage of worldwide supporters accumulated is reaching 200,000 km, equivalent to circling the world 5 times.  Hong Kong has maintained its position as the top mileage donor in Asia since the launch of the event, with accumulated mileage exceeding 10,000 km.  This year, the Brain Trekkers in Hong Kong including the patients and their families contributed a total of 1,820 km to the World Walk target. 

While the initiative of ‘Walk around the world for brain tumours’ has reached many people globally, Brain Trekking has also received much support from the local community.  The Samaritan Fund Scheme has sponsored the standard-of-care chemotherapy since 2013 to bring hopes to many of the desperate brain tumour patients. 

Donations to the event will be used to support brain tumour research in ultimate cure, provide adequate and professional clinical services to patients and their families, and train neuro-oncology researchers and clinicians to meet the highest standards.  CUHK Otto Wong Brain Tumour Centre will also continue to strive for better patient care in Hong Kong and further contribute to the field.
