The Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) presents the exhibition ‘Her Distinguished Brushwork: An Exhibition Featuring Paintings by the Seventeenth Century Artist Li Yin’ from 14 January to 12 March 2017. It showcases 17 extraordinary flowers-and-birds paintings of the late Ming dynasty, featuring a rich combination of treasures from the CUHK Art Museum, The Palace Museum and the Shanghai Museum. Members of the public are welcome to visit the exhibition. Admission is free.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held today (13 January). Those present included Prof. Wong Suk-ying, Associate Vice-President of CUHK; Ms. Qi Yaolan, Director of Retirement Services, the Palace Museum; Mr. Christopher Mok, Chairman, Advisory Committee of the Art Museum; Prof. Leung Yuen-sang, Director of the Institute of Chinese Studies; Prof. Harold Mok, Chairman of the Department of Fine Arts; Prof. Josh Yiu, Director of the Art Museum and Dr. Sylvia W.S. Lee, Curator.

‘Her Distinguished Brushwork’ uses the example of a famous seventeenth century Chinese woman painter, Li Yin, to present various issues faced by women painters during that period. Li Yin came from a poor family and was believed to have been a courtesan. She was married as a concubine. She painted as an amateur before the death of her husband, and became a professional painter afterwards. Through paintings from the three museums’ collections, the exhibition explores how women painters established their artistic personae, and how their works benefited their families.

To let the visitors have a better understanding of the exhibits and Chinese art through a relaxed setting, a special education corner with games and videos has been designed for the exhibition. A catalog will be compiled to accompany the exhibition and a series of education programmes will be held, including lectures and workshops. These will provide an excellent opportunity for the public to learn about the history of women living in the seventeenth century.
