Prof. Zou Jun, Chairman of Department of Mathematics and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Mathematics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has been honoured by the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) in the United States as a Fellow of the 2019 Class. Gathering the elites of applied mathematics who have made outstanding achievements and significant contributions to the disciplines from around the world, the SIAM Fellow Program is one of the most prestigious honours in the area of applied mathematics and computational science. Prof. Zou was awarded in recognition of his “contributions to numerical methods and analyses of direct and inverse problems of partial differential equations.”  He is one of two newly elected SIAM Fellows in 2019 from non-US and non-European countries.

Prof. Zou said, “I feel deeply honoured to be elected as a SIAM Fellow.  The Fellowship is a recognition of my research in the area of applied and computational mathematics, especially in computational electromagnetism, physical interface and inverse problems which arise from wide applications in industry, science, medicine, weather forecasts, finance, etc.  I hope my research can help promote the development of applied mathematics and eventually lead to the advancement of science and technology in the world.”

Prof. Zou graduated from Department of Mathematics, Jiangxi University in 1983 and received a master degree from Wuhan University in 1986. He then received his PhD degree in 1989 from Institute of Computational Mathematics, The Chinese Academy of Sciences. Before taking up his position in CUHK, he worked in University of California at Los Angeles as a post-doctoral fellow from 1993 to 1995 and an Assistant Professor in Computational and Applied Mathematics, from 1991 to 1993 in Technical University of Munich in Germany as a Visiting Assistant Professor and an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow. He is currently Vice President of Hong Kong Mathematical Society and President of East Asia Section of Inverse Problems International Association.  Prof. Zou has 145 research publications in Science Citation Index (SCI) ranked mathematical journals, and has been listed in the Highly Cited Mathematicians (Web of Science) continuously in the last 15 years. He serves currently as the associate editor of 12 SCI ranked international mathematics journals, including three most influential computational mathematics journals SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing and ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis.

About Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM)

SIAM is the world largest and most influential society in applied mathematics and computational science. It was established in 1952 as a nonprofit organisation to convey useful mathematical knowledge to other professionals who can implement mathematical theory for practical, industrial, or scientific applications. SIAM is an international community of over 14,000 individual members. Almost 500 academics, manufacturing, research and development, service and consulting organisations, government, and military organisations worldwide are institutional members.
