The 10th Lecture Series by CAS Academicians

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will hold the tenth Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Academicians Visit Programme from 21 to 24 February 2017.  Four distinguished CAS academicians, Prof. Peng Shige, Prof. Wu Yueliang and Prof. Du Jiangfeng of the Division of Mathematics and Physics, and Prof. Cao Xiaofeng of the Division of Life Sciences and Medical Sciences will visit CUHK.

In the afternoon of 22 February 2017 (Wed), they will give public lectures on CUHK campus to share their expertise in their respective fields of research.  The lectures will be conducted in Putonghua and/or English.  Members of the public are welcome.

During their visit, the academicians will meet with CUHK representatives to discuss collaboration opportunities in various fields. They will visit the School of Life Sciences, the Department of Physics, and the Department of Statistics.

Prof. Peng Shige was elected Academician of CAS in 2005. His fundamental contributions mainly lie in such fields as probability, control theory and financial mathematics. Through adopting the Feynman–Kac formula and theories of g-expectation and probability to non-linear situations, he has also played a key role in the generalisation of calculus, the theory and calculation of dynamic financial risk management, and the establishment of financial mathematics in mainland China. His lecture, entitled ‘Data-based Nonlinear Distributions under Robust Expectations’, aims to show better ways to compute the non-linear sample data, while reducing relevant uncertainties.

Prof. Wu Yueliang is a well-known theoretical physicist, who is also serving as Vice-President of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and Director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics of CAS. His research areas concern particle physics, quantum field theory, symmetry principle and cosmophysics. Professor Wu has won the second-class State Natural Science Award of China, and initiated the organisation of a number of large-scale conferences and workshops. He also serves as editor of various international journals. In his lecture, Prof. Wu is going to introduce the Chinese Taiji Programme in Space which is proposed to detect gravitational waves, and to discuss a Gravitational Quantum Field Theory, which is commonly adopted in theoretical physics to provide a unified description for all basic forces of nature.

Prof. Du Jiangfeng is an expert in the area of spin quantum physics and its applications, and has outstanding scientific achievements in spin quantum computation and simulation as well as experiential studies on quantum precision measurement. He has published more than 150 scientific papers, including 40 papers published in Nature, Science, Nature Physics, and Nature Communications. In his presentation, Professor Du will focus on his recent experimental study of quantum control over spins in solids and its applications, in collaboration with his research team.

Prof. Cao Xiaofeng is a Professor of the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, CAS. Her research team uses rice and Arabidopsis as models to investigate the epigenetic control of plant development, genome stability and stress response, particularly plant adaptation to low or high temperature. Professor Cao has received many awards including Young Female Scientists Awards of China and the DuPont Young Professor Award, USA, and was awarded Academician of CAS in 2015. Her lecture is entitled ‘Dynamic Histone Methylation in Higher Plants’.
