The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 22 July 2019 to establish a partnership in academic and professional activities. The MoU was signed by Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK and Mr. Keith Ruddock, Chair, Board of Trustees of BIICL. An inaugural seminar followed to celebrate the establishment of BIICL’s first office based in Asia.

The partnership with BIICL will make a valuable contribution to the development of the reputation of the Faculty of Law of CUHK as a world-class centre for international law and the comparative study of law. Under the MoU, CUHK and BIICL will cooperate in knowledge creation and exchange in various fields of law, such as international and comparative law. In addition, both parties will co-organise events and develop professional training and continuing professional development across the legal, governmental and non-governmental communities in Hong Kong and Asia.

Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK remarked, “As a comprehensive research university with a global vision, CUHK embraces internationalisation in its education and research, with a view to achieving excellence and bringing real impact to the world. The British Institute of International and Comparative Law is one of the world’s foremost research organisations in the field. I am therefore delighted to see CUHK join hands with the Institute to engage in research, knowledge transfer, and professional development and training, by tapping into each other’s strengths, resources and expertise. I have every faith that our partnership will yield plentifully in the years to come.”

Professor Christopher Gane, Dean of the Faculty of Law of CUHK said, “This partnership with the British Institute of International and Comparative Law opens up new opportunities for both the Faculty and the Institute. We look forward to working with the Institute in the development and communication of research, knowledge transfer and continuing professional development. At a time when universities are increasingly expected to engage in research and scholarship that has impact beyond the academy, our collaboration with the Institute will, I am confident, support the Faculty’s commitment to that end. We are also, of course, delighted to support the Institute’s ambitions for future development in Hong Kong and the rest of Asia.”

The inaugural seminar – “International Dispute Resolution: Reflections and Redirections” followed the MoU signing ceremony. Speakers at the seminar included The Rt Hon. the Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, former President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, senior lawyers, international arbitrators and academics from Hong Kong, Australia and the United Kingdom. They spoke of their views on international arbitration, investment arbitration as well as international dispute resolution. The seminar concluded with a closing speech by The Honourable Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma Tao-li, GBM.
