CUHK Members Receive Prestigious Hong Kong ICT Awards 2019

Three innovative Information and Communications Technology solutions led or developed by the professors and alumni of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have won top awards in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2019, namely Smart Business Grand Award, Smart Living Grand Award and Smart Mobility Grand Award.

CUHK currently has more than 900 granted patents in different jurisdictions worldwide. Some of these patents have been licensed to relevant industries that help bring these innovations to the market to benefit society. In academic year 2017-18, CUHK has received 185 granted patents and filed 327 patent applications for inventions developed in the areas of medical technology, biotechnology, information technology, telecommunications, and materials science.

Details of the three awards:

Smart Business Grand Award

Winner: Hong Kong Observatory (participated in by CUHK Physics graduates Mr Wong Wai-kin, Senior Scientific Officer and Mr Woo Wang-chun, Scientific Officer, HKO)

Project: From detection of rain to safeguarding of the community against hazardous weather

Description: An urban-scale nowcasting system, namely SWIRLS (Short-range Warning of Intense Rainstorms in Localised Systems) that can provide timely and effective forecasts of rainfall and lightning, which supports the HKO’s operation of rainstorm forecasting and warning services. It has been adopted in weather services in mainland China, Macao, India, South Africa and Malaysia. 

Smart Living Grand Award

Winner: ACE VR Ltd. (a TSSSU start-up founded by Professor Leung Kai-shun Christopher, Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Dr. Alex Lam, Scientific Officer, and Miss Elaine To, PhD candidate at CUHK)

Project: Evaluation of Visual Disability in a Virtual Reality (VR) Environment

Description: The technology applies VR simulations to visualise and quantify visual disability experienced by patients with visual impairment in the real world, empowering clinicians and eye care professionals to understand a patient’s perspective how visual impairment imparts vision-related disability in daily living. The VR simulations have been applied in Hong Kong Eye Hospital and CUHK eye clinic for patient education and visual rehabilitation and will be promoted to community centres and optical shops. 

Smart Mobility Grand Award

Winner: Hong Kong Airport Authority / Center of Cyber Logistics, AISCL, CUHK / ubiZense Ltd.

Project: IoT-Augmented Airfield Service System (AS2)

Description: AS2 brings real-time visibility to the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) work force to improve operational efficiency. AS2 enables a single view of apron activities of motorised equipment with a deep-minded map service to improve the overall performance of arrival baggage management. This is likely to have a positive impact on passenger experience. The system is completed and will be launched by HKIA in the near future.
