97 students of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) were awarded The Link First Generation University Student Scholarship (Link Scholarship) in 2018/19, in recognition of their outstanding achievements in academic studies and community services. This year, 190 awardees were selected from over 800 applicants in the eight universities across Hong Kong, and more than half of the awardees are from CUHK. CUHK is delighted and encouraged by the excellent performances of students.

CUHK is most grateful for the generous support from Link to our students. Professor Wong Suk-Ying, Associate Vice-President and Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, attended the Scholarship Presentation Ceremony. She said, “Although many of our students come from less privileged socio-economic backgrounds, they have strived very hard to gain admission to CUHK. Today, I feel very proud to see so many CUHK recipients of the Link Scholarship. In particular, this not only marks their achievement in their academic studies but also their contribution to the community.”

Mr Nick Allen, Chairman of Link Asset Management Limited said, “With the launch of the Link University Scholarship in 2015, and the associated Alumni programme, we hope students who may be disadvantaged by their family background will have the opportunities to realise their dreams for a better future.”

Li Wing Man, Year 3 student in Nursing, said, “I used to live in a sub-divided flat, which was about 100 square feet, with three family members and prepare a lunchbox for school every day in order to save money. My parents had to work for long hours to earn a living.” Her childhood dream was to get into a university to improve the living conditions. Now that Wing Man is studying in CUHK, she understands that she should not simply live for good academic results and that she has to make an effort to serve the needy. She has therefore participated in a voluntary teaching programme as well as volunteer work at a hospital in Vietnam.

Another scholarship recipient, Louie Yan, Year 4 student in Sociology, also remembers her difficult time in childhood struggling with learning English and with very limited financial support. “From the blessing of being in CUHK, I was given so many opportunities to realise many ‘impossibles’, such as getting on the master’s list and dean’s list for consecutive three and two years, teaching an SEN student, publishing in the student press of CUHK, witnessing my own student entering university, etc. This scholarship will be the motivation and empowerment for me to pursue an MPhil degree and to start off my 2 social entrepreneurships, namely Emologue and Sunny Wardrobe,” Yan said.
