Nine teams of students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) won top awards at the ‘Challenge Cup’ National Competition Hong Kong Regional Final – Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2017 last Tuesday (23 May).  CUHK students received one Top Prize, one first-class award, two second-class awards and three third-class awards in the Innovation category, as well as  three third-class awards in the Entrepreneurship category.

The Top Prize winner under the Innovation category is Mr. Dang Xiaobing, PhD Year 2 student from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering. His winning project is ‘Research on Incremental Bending of Three Dimensional Free Form Metal Plates and Its Prototype Machine’, which was also awarded the first-class award of the ‘Mathematics and Physics/ Mechanics and Control Systems’ group.

The invention of Mr. Dang Xiaobing provides a new and simplified manufacturing platform of three dimensional free form metal plates with high efficiency. The traditional method used in shipbuilding is ‘Line Heating Method’, which is not only labour intensive but also inefficient and error-prone. The new ‘Incremental Bending Method’ can be widely used in heavy industries including shipbuilding.

The ‘Challenge Cup’ National Competition Hong Kong Regional Final – Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2017 was organized by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association.  591 students from 18 local tertiary institutions submitted 181 projects for the two categories of the competition, namely ‘Innovation’ and ‘Entrepreneurship’.  Winning teams will represent Hong Kong at the biennial ‘Challenge Cup’ National Entrepreneurship Competition 2017.
