The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) recently organised the ‘Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival with the Elderly’ event on CUHK campus for 200 elderly people. Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President, CUHK, Prof. Michael Hui and Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellors and Vice-Presidents, CUHK, Prof. Fung Tung, Associate Vice-President, CUHK and volunteers from the CUHK ∙ Care Service team celebrated the festive season with the elderly.

There were many entertaining activities arranged for the elderly, including a demonstration of fitness exercises by the students of Gerontology, a Cantonese opera performance by CUHK alumni and the writing of Chinese calligraphy by Prof. Joseph Sung. During the activities, Prof. Sung sang for the elderly the popular song, ‘The Moon Represents My Heart’, accompanied by the management team and guests. After this, the elderly toured the CUHK campus to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

In view of the overwhelming responses from CUHK staff, students and alumni last year, CUHK has produced ‘CUHK Mooncake’ again this year. Nearly 500 boxes have been sold so far since the launch. For each box sold, a free mooncake will be delivered by the CUHK∙Care Service team to the elderly in Shatin and Tai Po. Since many of those who purchase ‘CUHK Mooncake’ donate all their purchased mooncakes to the elderly, the CUHK∙Care Service team delivers 1,000 pieces of ‘CUHK Mooncake’ to the elderly in Shatin and Tai Po during August and September. The profit gained from the mooncake sales will be donated to support the I∙CARE Programme of CUHK.

The gift bags delivered to the elderly are sponsored by Strategic CSR Network, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to serve underprivileged communities in Hong Kong on an ongoing basis. By leveraging Strategic Public Relations Group’s existing business and social networks, and by functioning as a one-stop platform, Strategic CSR Network is able to connect and bring together different parties, including corporations, NGOs/charities and volunteers to achieve common goals. Strategic CSR Network also welcomes reusable product donations so as to reduce solid waste.

‘CUHK Mooncake’ is baked by Caritas La Vie, a social enterprise which provides job and training opportunities for vulnerable groups such as ex-mentally ill persons and persons with disabilities, to help them recover.
