Survey Findings on the HKSAR Government’s Popularity in August 2014Released by Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies at CUHK

A telephone survey was conducted from 19 to 21 August 2014 by Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to study the popularity of the HKSAR Government for the month of August 2014.  738 respondents aged 18 or above were successfully interviewed, with a response rate of 45.0%.  The sampling error is + or – 3.61% at a confidence level of 95%. 

Major findings are summarized as follows:

Satisfaction towards the HKSAR Government.  According to the survey of August 2014, while 43.9% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction towards the HKSAR Government, 17.2% said they were satisfied.  37.4% of 738 respondents answered ‘in-between’.  The corresponding figures in July 2014 were 44.9%, 22.3%, and 32.3%.  Results of this month were significantly different from those of the past month statistically.

Rating of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying.  The current survey showed that the performance rating of Chief Executive (with a point scale ranging from 0 to 100 while 50 as a passing mark) stood at 42.4 in average and it was 43.5 last month.  No statistically significant difference in the performance rating of Leung Chun-ying was found between this month and July 2014.    

Ratings of Three Secretaries.  The ratings of Chief Secretary for Administration (Carrie Lam), Financial Secretary (John Tsang), and Secretary for Justice (Rimsky Yuen) in August 2014 were 54.8, 56.8, and 49.3 respectively.  The corresponding figures in July 2014 were 56.9, 56.1, and 49.4.  No statistically significant differences were found between July and August 2014.

Overall Rating of the HKSAR Governing Team (including politically-appointed officials).  The overall rating of the HKSAR governing team was 46.6 in August 2014 and 46.4 in July 2014.  Statistically, the rating of this month was not significantly different from that of July 2014.

Trust in the HKSAR and the Central Governments.  In August 2014, 23.8% of respondents showed trust in the HKSAR government and 38.3% expressed distrust; 36.7% answered ‘in-between’.  The results of July 2014 were 28.6%, 39.2%, and 31.1% respectively.  Concerning the level of trust in the Central Government in August 2014, while 42.6% said they did not trust the Central Government, 23.1% answered the opposite; 32.2% said ‘in-between’.  The corresponding figures in the previous month were 43.8%, 25.5%, and 28.6% respectively.  No statistically significant changes were observed between July and August 2014.
