Remarks:

WWF is now organizing “Earth Hour 2014” to raise public awareness on climate change. At 8:30pm on March 29 (Saturday), Hong Kong will join over 7,000 cities across the world to switch off their lights for one hour to promote awareness on climate change and urge to reduce our ecological footprint.

As in the past years, The Chinese University of Hong Kong will support this global campaign to show our commitment to combat climate change. During Earth Hour, the decorative lighting (flood lighting unless otherwise specified) at the following locations will be switched off as a gesture of support:

  • Crooked Bridge and Arch Bridge at Lake Excellentiam of Chung Chi College
  • United College Water Towers
  • The lawn outside Adam Schall Residence, the roof garden of TC Cheng Building, the lawn outside Wu Chung Multi-media Library, 1/F podium of Chan Chun Ha Hostel, the signage of Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building at United College
  • Herbal Garden, common areas of student hostels at Shaw College
  • College plaque facing University Avenue, roof of Chan Chun Ha Hall, lawn of 1/F hostels, open plaza of Lee Quo Wei Hall, ceiling lights of hostel reception at G/F at S.H. Ho College
  • External signage, planter lightings, external LED light strip, podium downlights, as well as lighting in the main entrance hall, function rooms on 2/F and common areas of student hostels at C.W. Chu College
  • The water wall feature in front of Lee Woo Sing College
  • Satellite Remote Sensing Receiving Station
  • The sculpture “The Gate” in front of the University Library, the Forum and Outdoor Garden at Lee Shau Kee Building in Main Campus

Colleges have pledged their full support for the event. Besides switching off non-essential lighting, students in hostels are encouraged to join in the action.

Going beyond light off: ‘Don’t Give Up, Give Something up’

Apart from switching off lights, Earth Hour 2014 also carries the theme of “Don’t Give Up, Give Something Up!” and encourages participating individuals to consider saving resources and reducing ecological footprint by giving up practices like consuming unsustainable seafood, using too much paper, taking long showers, and so on, where possible.

Students, staff and alumni are most welcomed to join the University and support the Earth Hour 2014 by signing up for Earth Hour at https://earthhour.wwf.org.hk/en/get-involved .
