About Hong Kong International Poetry Nights International Poetry Nights in Hong Kong (IPNHK) is an award-winning biennial poetry festival established by renowned contemporary Chinese poet Bei Dao. Since its debut in 2009 in Hong Kong, IPNHK has become the most influential series of international poetry events in the sinophone areas, delivered internationally acclaimed poets’ thoughts and ideas about poetry to China.

Synopsis of Lecture:

Organized by Faculty of Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Poetry Festival Foundation, the fifth International Poetry Nights in Hong Kong will be held on 21 to 26 November 2017 in several local universities. The theme “An Ancient Enmity” comes from Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, “For somewhere there is an ancient enmity / between our daily life and the great work”, in an era of rapid change, maybe it is time to ask—whether or what ancient principles still exist in our poetry?

In order to rich audience’s experience in poetry appreciation, the Poetry Nights includes various activities such as poetry discussion, recitation, music concert, film screening and exhibition. After the events in Hong Kong, the poets and lyricists will be divided into five groups and go on to join poetry activities held in five Mainland cities, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan and Xiamen.

Over twenty-two poets and lyrists from different countries will join the six-day Poetry Nights. Highlight events include Opening Music Concert “The Secret of Heaven” performed by “The Father of Chinese Rock” Mr. Cui Jian, independent musicians Zhou Yunpeng and Zhong Zuo, Dialogue Discussion presented by renowned Syrian poet Adonis and Japanese poet Shuntaro Tanikawa, as well as a one-month exhibition showing works of past four Poetry Nights in Eslite (Causeway Bay Store).
