Synopsis of Lecture:

In the light of the growing pervasiveness of the Internet in human affairs, UNESCO has adopted a new concept of “Internet Universality”, to highlight features and trends of the Internet which UNESCO envisions and believes are fundamental to fulfilling its potential for sustainable development. The concept recognizes that the internet is a network of economic and social interactions and relationships, which has great potential to enable human rights, empower individuals and communities, and facilitate sustainable development. “Internet Universality” as a concept highlights the behavioral norms and values underpinning the Internet and its governance; and points to the need to strengthen these norms and values so as to have an Internet that is ubiquitous and serves everyone. The lecture will share UNESCO’s related projects and ongoing works to operationalize the concept of Internet Universality in global and national Internet governance, such as developing Internet Universality indicators, which aims to help governments and other stakeholders assess their own national Internet environments and to promote the values associated with Internet Universality.
