Last year in May, the Art Museum organized the Second Museum Professionals Training Workshop with the generous sponsorship from the Bei Shan Tang Foundation. The workshop, with its theme on “Exhibition Planning and Education”, involved a presentation on micro-exhibition plans which turned out to be a showcase of brilliant exhibition proposals by workshop participants from various museums in Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China. Ms. Meng Qian’s plan was chosen among many others to be materialized and thus, bringing about this collaboration between the Anhui Museum and the Art Museum. This exhibition centers on the E Jun Qi bronze tallies collected in the Anhui Museum, which was a permit of tariff exemption bestowed to Qi, the Lord of E by the Chu king Mi’huai. Only five tallies were unearthed in the whole country and we are showing two in this exhibition, among which one is designated for land transport, and the other is for water transport. Both inscribed with seal script characters inlaid with gold, the text on the tallies documents the trade, transport routes and tariff regime of the State of Chu in the Warring States period. Shedding lights on the tally system, commerce, transportation network, history, geography and feudal system of the Chu kingdom, the tallies are very rich in academic value in spite of their small sizes. To further enhance visitors’ understanding of the E Jun Qi tallies, parts of chariots, apparatus for measurement and Chu currencies are also selected to supplement the main exhibits.
