Event Details:

Topic: The Court Production of the Illustrated Regulations for Ceremonial Paraphernalia of the Qing dynasty (Huangchao liqi tushi 皇朝禮器圖式) and the “Export Paintings”
Speaker: Prof. Lai Yu-chih (Research Associate, Academia Sinica)

The Illustrated Regulations for Ceremonial Paraphernalia of the Qing dynasty (Huangchao liqi tushi 皇朝禮器圖式) is generally regarded as being completed in 1759. However, the whole production is quite complicated. It was transformed and synthesized from the early productions of the Album on Ritual Vessels, Album on Imperial Household Insignia, Album on Millitary Uniforms and Weapons, Album on Instruments, Album on Hats and Garments, etc. Since the scale of the production was almost unprecedented, the project was outsourced to the outside artisans. It is interesting to note that there are many so-called Chinese export paintings in the European collection, such as the Bibliothèque nationale de France, which share similar format and style in depicting various kinds of objects or wares and at the same time also reminds us of many European contemporary design drawings. Therefore, this talk, in addition to reconstructing the formation of the Illustrated Regulations for Ceremonial Paraphernalia of the Qing dynasty, I would like to show the multiple loops of influence among European design drawing, the Chinese export painting, and the focus of today, the Illustrated Regulations for Ceremonial Paraphernalia of the Qing dynasty in the Qianlong court.
