The ‘da Vinci Surgical System’ co-invented by Prof. Samuel Au and his team from CUHK Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering (MAE)  only requires a single, small incision, through which the robotic arms with surgical instrument down to 3.5mm and a 3D endoscope to be placed inside the body. This allows the surgeon to control the computer console to carry out more complicated surgeries like prostatic and uterine cancer surgeries and even liver transplantation. A total of 4 million surgeries have been completed since its launch.
